Birthday: April 9, 1963
Events/Teams: Triathlon, Road Races/ Human Powered Racing
Family: I am married to an incredibly supportive husband - Ian Harper – who loves to buy new bikes and bike parts for me and comes out to every event to cheer me on. He’s an avid musician and, for every new bike or major bike part I acquire, we try to even out the “love” with a new guitar for him. We have a 9-year-old son Erik who is a very active piano player, swimmer, and Wii player. Erik completed his first “tiny-tri” when he was 6. We’re looking forward to doing the Qualicum Beach Triathlon together again this year.
Favorite Race: Qualicum Beach Triathlon; Nike Triathlon (although it is no longer held; but the swim was in Thetis Lake which is lovely). I also enjoyed doing the bike leg of the New Balance Half Ironman and Sri Chin Moi cause you can spend all of your energy on the bike and not worry about the run!
Best Race Performance: Repeated 3rd place finisher at the [surprisingly competitive] Qualicum Beach Triathlon; 2nd place finish as a team at 2007 Sri Chin Moi; and 2nd place female masters finisher in sprint distance race at 2003 Nike International Triathlon.
Other Hobbies: Sailing, gardening, baking, and doing anything that is active and ideally outdoors.
Interesting Facts:
I trained for, dieted down, and successfully competed in a body-building contest. Nothing like walking on stage with so little body fat, lots of tanning cream and completely covered in a can of “Pam” for the “glow effect”.
I used to race sailboats, but similar to triathlon training, it’s “all or nothing”; so maybe we’ll cruise as a family someday.
I won the World Croquet Tournament in 1995 with my father and a third partner. This is an interesting fact that you might want to keep in your hip pocket if you every host a garden party and want help in beating your opponent at a friendly game of croquet.
Happy sayings: You’re only as happy as you want to be. Life is what you make it. In life, do what you love; the money will come.
